A French artist is blending graffiti,
sculpture and traditional painting to create a series of stunning
artworks that literally jump out of the canvas.Marchal
Mithouard, whose tag name is Shaka, uses a variety of everyday objects
for his striking pieces which feature aggressive figures portrayed in
stunning vibrant colours.
The technique, known as bas-relief, involves making certain elements of the work more prominent than others by
either carving away material or adding new layers. It is not new having
been used widely in Italy during the Renaissance and even earlier in
other parts of the world.
One of the incredible pieces by French artist Marchal Mithouard,
who goes by the monicker Shaka, which blend graffiti with sculpture
Mithouard, whose works appear to have an
underlying theme of revolt and rebellion, has created art that literally
jumps out of the canvas
However by incorporating street art
techniques and using a vast array of bright and vivid colours, Mithouard
has created something that is decisively 21st century.
Mithouard
whose paintings have an underlying theme of revolt and rebellion says
his foremost influences include Vincent van Gogh, Le Caravage and
Expressionism.
Wild bunch: This snarling group of men,
portrayed in vivid technicolour, appear to jump out of the canvas in
another of Shaka's pieces
Trolley dash: The aggressive human figures
formed from a multitude of intertwined objects are partially inspired by
the works of Caravaggio, Arcimboldo, and Van Gogh
Mother and child: The technique, known as
bas-relief, involves making certain elements of the work more prominent
than others either carving away material or adding new layers

What the blazes? Amazingly detailed sculptures made from match heads go up in flames as the artist himself sets them alight

These impressive works of art are
the result of meticulous work with thousands of tiny colourful matches
which have been used to portray famous faces and recreate legendary
artworks. However, despite his hard work and the hours he put in to creating the sculptures, Scottish artist David Mach likes to open his exhibitions by setting them on fire.It only takes a few seconds and sends
the flames up to 6ft in the air, leaving a charred version of the
original, but the 55-year-old says he is not destroying his work, but
creating new art.
The Devil: David Mach's head of the devil made with different coloured matches was set on fire in a recent performance
The devil on fire: David Mach set his sculpture alight, a method which he discovered by accident in 1982
âYou lose the colour but you
different shades of ash, different greys and blacks. Itâs a real
ferocious act of creation. You donât lose it, what you get is another
thing.â
The sculptures are crafted by firstly
making a clay mould of the head and creating a fibreglass or plastic
version from it. The matchsticks are then stuck on using wood glue.
The different coloured matches are
imported from Japan and used to create everything from animals to
Charlie Chaplin, world leaders and cartoon characters.Mr Mach started working with matches in 1982 and made a portrait which ended up being the first portrait that he sold.
The stunning effect of the art going
up in flames was discovered when the collector who bought the sculpture
accidentally set it on fire whilst cleaning it.
He called Mr Mach over and they agreed that the âmatchheadsâ were performance pieces and he began setting fire to his work.âWhen I have ideas I want to make
them, and not just some of them, but all of them. As a result of that my
sculpture covers a multitude of sins,â Mr Mach said.
He set 'The Devil' alight at his
recent exhibition Precious Light in Edinburgh. The exhibition is based
on the King James Bible and just finished its second outing at Galway
Arts Festival
David Mach's take on Charlie Chaplin uses white, black and red matches mixed with wood
Blue-Oop-a-Doop: 1930's cartoon character Betty Boop looks uncharacteristicall
Warhol-ian: The face of Marylin Monroe in
different colour combinations in a display which looks inspired by the
legendary portrait series by Andy Warhol
Red and Blue: Sculptures of Pablo Picasso, and
Mahatma Gandhi, made in 2010, have not yet been set on fire by David
Mach and his team
David on David: This sculpture made from yellow matches is a take on Michelangelo'

When Construction Goes Wrong!
Here are some hilarious building blunders, wonder where the architects who designed these structures got their degree from, if they have any!
Hilarious Building Blunders
When you have workers who don't care for what they're building, and architects with very little common sense, then you'd better not panic when you see results. Mournful cries like "Oh No!", "You've ruined it!", "Can it possibly be rebuilt??" are not going to help, while a simple "Oops!" would also sound like a gross understatement. In many cases the architectural horrors shown on this page were left "as is", without any fixes. The tenants and businesses moved into these structures, leaving passerbyes and photographers to marvel at their idiotic construction.
First let's get an obvious Photoshop job out of the way - the builders may have finally build something out of Escher's bad dream:
Stairs into nothing - a classic blunder:
If builders had a little more to drink, the stairs might've turned into a modern art sculpture ("Revolutions"
Situation with doors is just as dire. They would not open, lead anywhere, or even exist...
Especially when the slogan above the door reads "Have a Successful Working Day!"
or "Sales Center", apparently with a very poor sales record:
Same thing with balconies:
An insurmountable challenge - to properly align windows:
Even harder is to make the ends meet...
We really hope that the picture above is photoshop :)
Speaking of bridges... some would require an extra support:
Things got in the way? Just build around them!
The caption says: "Please be careful when you put revision clouds on your drawings. Some of the contractors do not understand" -
Driveway Oops:
Crazy Garages:
Wrong Placement:
- of heaters and air-conditioners:
- of ATM:
- of camera:
- of toilets:
The only power outlet is on ... the ceiling:
They've been building something for months... Now the Final Results are here! Get yourself a tranquilizer:
Do you think this ad is a pure fantasy?
Think again:
